Wow. I didn’t know any of that.

I guess I kind of assumed, since the Apollo 18 tour was the first time I saw them live, and since the songs sounded the same way live that they did on the album, that the 5 people on stage were the same 5 people that recorded the album. My mistake.

I don’t disagree with you, but when I saw the band during the Apollo 18 tour (In the gymnasium of CMU in Pittsburgh), they did not have a backing band, it was just those two “Twin Quasars of Rock” performing, without a band.

I agree, John Henry was the first album recorded with a set band that played in every song. Apollo 18 continued the tradition of each consecutive album having more and more guest artists appearing on a few songs each, but they were just that–guest artists. See, for example, http://web.archive.org/web/19970606205142/www.tmbg.com/melody/art/henry.html which says, “Since this [John Henry] was the first album where we worked with a live band instead of a drum machine it [John Henry] seemed an apt title.”

Interestingly, when John Henry first appeared in stores, it had a sticker on it mentioning that it was the debut of the band (meaning the full band backing up the Johns), which gave some of my friends the incorrect notion that John Henry was TMBG’s very first album. :)

um. hate to take issue with you here. but john henry WAS in fact their first album produced with a full band. it was marketed as such at the time, and talked about as such in their old printed news letter.

even if you doubt me as a source, i would argue you can tell this just by listening to the albums.

if you think i’m wrong i would welcome being proven wrong, but i am fairly certain that i (and apparently “a lot” of other people you’ve heard from in the past) are correct on this point.

My guess (and this is a long shot) is that they both have keyboard in them?

Sorry, I’ve racked my brain, but that is all I can come up with at this time.
